A quick guide for visitors in the Zadar & Sukošan area – plus where to find gentler entries and how to stay safe.
The Rocky Beach Problem

Croatian Beaches. If you visited Zadar or Sukošan, you likely saw beaches full of pebbles, sharp stones, and larger rocks. The sea is crystal clear, but walking barefoot can be uncomfortable or risky: cuts, twisted ankles, or stepping on sea urchins.
Why Croatian Beaches Are Rocky
- Geology: The Dalmatian coast is mostly limestone and dolomite, which break into pebbles and stones rather than fine sand.
- Clean water: With no sand to stir up, rocky shores help keep the water clear and blue.
- Coastal protection: Big rocks often protect harbors and reduce erosion from waves.
- Marine life: Rocky bottoms host more fish, crabs, and sea urchins than sandy ones.
Safety Tips
- Wear water shoes to prevent cuts and urchin stings.
- Enter slowly and scan for larger rocks and sea urchins.
- Choose beaches with prepared entries or designated family zones.
